The four-day trip to Manchester, England was successfully ended in order for the students of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Polytechnic School of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AuTH) to meet the country’s education system and interact with the corresponding school of University of Manchester.
The trip was an initiative of the IEEE Student Branch (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers), which consists of undergraduate students of Electrical and Computer Engineering. The branch is responsible for the organization of technical, technological and entertainment events, aiming to impart knowledge within the Electrical Engineering Department. It is the first time the branch organizes a trip to Manchester, but it has also organized successful trips to cities in the past, such as Leuven and Eidhoven.
This year’s trip was organized by Tsiakas Kosmas and Papazoglou Athanasios, third year students at Electrical and Computer Engineering, in collaboration with the equivalent IEEE Student Branch of the University of Manchester.
During their stay in Manchester, the 23 participants had the opportunity to be guided at the university campus, where a presentation from the two IEEE student branches took place and the students were informed for the postgraduate courses of University of Manchester and specifically of the Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE) Department. Besides the university campus, there were tours and presentations in the laboratories of Electrical and Electronics Engineering and Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering, where the students had the opportunity to interact with modern technology and learn about research programs of the university.
Furthermore, the participants visited the Research Center Jordell Bank, where they learned about its history, the current researches and they took a closer look at the Lovell Telescope, which is the third largest telescope in the world. The students, also, visited the museum of the University of Manchester and the Museum of Science and Industry, where several interactive presentations from the museum staff took place.
In their free time, the participants got to know the city of Manchester, the famous English pubs and taste the exquisite English beer. Also, they visited the Trafford Centre shopping mall and the Old Trafford stadium.
The IEEE Student Branch of AuTH seeks to organize other similar educational trips to European countries, in order for the Greek students to have the opportunity to broaden their scientific and spiritual horizons.
